Dildo-Envy? The Average Dildo Size Compared To The Average Penis

In Search For The Average Dildo Size

What is the average dildo size? What is a perceived measure and the real measure? From the research and information from over 1,500 different dildos lies the result to what the average dildo size is , and how well a penis measures up to it.

This article is part of the dildo database research. To read about the research go here.

Abstract

There have been countless studies measuring the size of the human penis over the past years. We debunked the comparison between one of these studies and the average dildo size ? with data pulled from a database of over 1,500 dildos sold.

This was done as part of our development of a shape-shifting dildo, the Dodil, in an effort to decide for a starting size.

So, after weeks of work and research we found that the average dildo measures up at a full length of 7.52″ (19.1 cm), beating the average penis which stands at 5.16″ (13.1 cm).

However, the usable length differs, as you need room for your hand holding a dildo. By such, the usable dildo length is only 6.54″ (16.6 cm). Still, that makes the average dildo 21% longer.

When it comes to girth there is less difference. The width of the average sized dildo is at 4.65″ (11.82 cm) while the human penis is just slightly thinner with its 4.59″ (11.66 cm).

Dildo-envy?

Sigmund Freud once proposed the idea of penis envy, meaning that girls can feel deprived and envious because they do not have a penis.

The author Philip K Dick once wrote the precursor novel to Blade Runner: Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep.

Which inspires to paraphrase Mr. Dick with a Freudian slip and wonder: Do Fleshlights Suffer From Dildo-envy?

Anyhow, and fleshlights aside, let us elaborate on why we now introduce this notion of dildo-envy.

Me, myself and my penis

Ultimately, there are few things in life which crave as much of your attention as your penis. You talk and joke about it, cuss it and compare it. Pull and play.

Over the course of a lifetime, you spend most time alone with your mini-me. Yet, every now and then it gets intimately involved in situations together with someone else besides you, yourself and your hands.

Funnily enough, whichever size or shape we are, in those close encounters we are all adequate according to what our partners say. Still, we obsess.

And, whether in the context of a sauna or a changing room, most do also sneak a peak to see how their member measures up with others. If now this comes from competition or comparison, measuring is definitely a big thing for many.

What we are about to reveal is how an average penis measures up to the average dildo size.

15,000 makes for big data when researching the average penis

As if our own obsession is not enough, there are others who take penis-talk to another level. In the most recent study from 2015, urologists and scientists at the British Journal of Urology disclosed the average penis dimensions from the collected results from 15,000 erect penises.

Studies like this serve several purposes, mainly regarding condom size. Still, it is easy to interpret the result for finding an answer to the obvious and eternal question:

?How do I measure up??

Looking at the results from the 15,000 penises, anything between 4 inches up to 6.3 inches are where 90% of the erect penises reside. Thus, the size of an average erect penis lands at a length of 5.16 inches (13,1 cm) and with a circumference (girth) of 4.59 inches (11,7 cm).

When researching the average dildo size, 1,500 makes for BIG data

Back in 2017 we set out to research the development of a moldable dildo. The dildo we produce can be altered in size and shape, but we wanted to find an optimal length and girth which could function as the original size of the product.

In the search for an optimal average dildo size, we did an investigation of different dildos sold across the globe. Dimensions, prices, and materials, all ended up in what now is a massive and still growing database of 1,500 dildos.

Recently we transcribed all our data to make it comparable to the results from the penis-study. Out of curiosity, we wanted to know what more there is to be found.

15,000 penises is a pretty big investigation. Yet, this is to represent a global population of adult penis owners. Consequently, when we analyze data from 1,500 dildos derived from a substantially smaller dildo population it means we have even more comprehensive data.

With data gathered and crunched, we could now calculate how much our evolved human standard penis-size is challenged by the collective and vivid minds of dildo-designers and manufacturers.

Perceived Length

?It looks bigger in the right light!?

Well, a penis might be appearing visually more handsome in certain light and angles. Still, it?s anyhow no match for the ubiquitous dildos sized from 7 inches and beyond.

In fact, many retailers will actually push their largest dildo specimens up front so they will catch your eye and reaction. Probably because, if you were not thinking about dildos earlier, you are more prone to do so when you get those large trunks in your face.

The following image is showing the average full length of a dildo (which most often is the same as the advertised and labeled length).

With a full (perceived) length of 7.52 inches, the average dildo size, coming to length, is roughly 32% longer than its human counterpart. No wonder they can come across as big, they really are.

But before this gets out of hand. Let us rather talk about the actually used or insertable length.

No matter the length in a dildo we are talking about, it mostly need a helping hand to be maneuvered. Thus they come with some kind of handle. Very often the handle comes in the design of a scrotum, adding the perceived extra length to the whole apparatus. But such a dildo can therefore not be inserted to its full length.

Which then takes us closer to reality, as we look at what measurements to really compare.

The most relevant length of a dildo is what can be inserted

Therefore, when removing the visual advantage a dildo has, we will push it back a bit on the yardstick.

Still, the research shows that the usable and insertable length of an average dildo, which in human standards equals the length from the pubic bone to the tip of the penis, is about 21% longer than what we humans can muster.

Or in numbers, 6.54 inches /16.6 cm compared to the 5.16 inch / 13.1 cm penis.

According to the British study, an erect penis of 6.3 inches, or more, is in the 95th percentile. Which means that out of 100, only five would have an erect penis longer than 6.3 inches (16 cm).

Nevertheless, compared to the dildos in our study, those five penises will be surpassed by 60% of the dildos. In other words, 60 out of 100 dildos are larger than the 5% of the largest penises.

The dildo simply has the upper hand regarding both visual length and usable length.

As for the last and final dimension though, which is girth, some would say that this is what matters the most in intimate encounters.

Girth is great

In both the British penis-survey and with dildos, girth is measured in regards to the circumference at the thickest section. So there?s no risk of misconceptions when it comes to this dimension.

In conclusion, the compared circumference is where we find the least difference between an erect human penis and the average dildo size, as illustrated in the image below.

Obviously, the dildo-designers have been more moderate in this aspect. There is only a slight difference of 0,06 inch or 0,16 cm in the comparison of average girth. But again, when comparing largest penises to largest dildos, the dildo keeps the upper hand as among the larger dildos, there are really thick ones, some with the width of a soda can to be found.

However, one particular characteristic we found to be a common denominator for almost every dildo of large or extreme girths, is that they are all made from materials which are soft and flexible. They are floppy.

So by comparison, again, an erect penis has close to the same average girth but will more likely stand erect with a firmness a rubber dong cannot match.

Does size matter?

All this comparing; penis vs penis, penis vs dildo can indeed be problematic.

Now, when looking at the results of both the data and the dimensions of our own dildo, it makes you wonder whether we might have fallen in the same trap as the long line of sex-toy inventors before us when we chose to follow dildo-standards instead of penis-standards.

Can it be presumed that the vaginas of the world want a dildo which is bigger than the average penis? (According to this study, it might be so, at least in terms of brief sexual encounters). Yet, the most plausible explanation for the dildos being longer is that, scrotum or not, there needs to be enough of length to make space for a maneuvering hand.

Finally, as much as measurements are individual there is also a lot of individuality regarding dildo-designs. Yet, they can never compete with the warm and multifaceted relationship between human beings.

Simply put, however impressive the average dildo might appear, it still cannot kiss and caress.
