Usually you know, or at least have an idea, of how you went in an interview.
In other words, whether the interview went well or not.
But sometimes it?s hard to tell.
Sometimes you?re on edge when you go into the interview, particularly if you really want the job, then when you walk out of the interview, you?re not sure whether the hiring manager was interested in you for the job or not.
So here are a few tips to give you an idea of how the interview went so you have an idea of whether you?re in the running for the job.
The best indicator of how well you went in an interview is how long the interview went for.
If the interview went for a long time, particularly if it went over-time, then that?s a good gauge that the interviewer was interested in you and what you had to say, and most likely thinks you?re a good candidate for the job.

On the other hand, if the interview was cut short, that?s more than likely a sign that you need to keep looking.
If the interviewer cuts your interview short then it?s most likely they don?t think you?re a good match for the role.
If the interview went for the allocated time, then the interviewer wrapped it up, that?s not necessarily a bad sign.
It could just mean that the interviewer was on a tight time schedule so needed to end the interview at the allocated time because they had another meeting or something else arranged directly after your interview.
So, when it comes to how long your interview was, if it ran over time then that?s a great sign the interviewer was interested in your for the job.
If the interview went for the allocated time, that?s not necessarily a bad sign either.
But if the interview didn?t go for long, then keep applying for other jobs because it?s unlikely you?ll be offered the job you just interviewed for.
Another indicator of how the interview went is how engaged in the conversation the hiring manager was.
If you and the hiring manager got on well, and they were interested in what you had to say and responded well to your answers to their questions, then that?s a good sign the interview went well.
It could be that you just clicked and got on well with the interviewer, but usually, when the interviewer is highly engaged in the conversation with you, then that?s usually a sign they think you?re a good candidate for the job.
On the other hand, if the conversation with the interviewer was strained and didn?t flow well, then that could be an indicator that the interviewer came out of the interview with a less positive view of you as a candidate for the job.
If the conversation in the interview flowed well and you answered the questions you were asked well, and the interviewer seemed impressed with your answers, then that?s another indication that the interview went well.
In addition to that, if you answered the competency questions well, there?s a good chance the interview went well and you?re a serious candidate to be offered the job.
Competency questions are the questions in an interview that relate directly to your ability to be able to perform in the job.
They hold more weight than other questions when it comes to considering you for the role.
If you?d like some help on how best to answer competency questions, even if you don?t have direct experience in the role you?re applying for, then check out my video on how to make an interviewer see you as the right fit for the job.
Even if you don?t have direct experience in the job you?re applying for, you can still impress the interviewer, and I show you how to do it in that video, so it?s well worth watching.
So if you answered the competency questions well and the conversation between you and the interviewer flowed well, then that?s a great sign.

One other consideration that could give you an indication of how you went in the interview, but also of the company you?re applying to, is how well prepared the interviewer was when they conducted the interview with you.
If they were well prepared and engaged with you, then that?s a better sign than if they were unprepared for the interview and just winged it.
If the interviewer was unprepared then that could be a sign that the company isn?t as organized as they could be.
Depending on the role you?re applying for, this could be to your advantage or not.
If the company is relatively new then if you?re offered the job, this could mean that you?ll have a fair degree of autonomy on the job, which you may be very happy about.
However, if you?re the type of person who likes structure where you work or in the role you?re in, then an unorganized interviewer might be a signal to you that the job may be one that you don?t want to accept, even if it?s offered to you.
So there are some of the indicators to give you an idea of how well you went in an interview.
