If I could change one thing about the world, what would it be?

There are many things that should be changed about the world. There should be less emphasis on grades. There should be education, housing, healthcare for all. There should be better treatment of animals. There should be more openness towards ideas that conflict our own. We should end global warming, crime, war, racism, terrorism, cancer, pollution, poverty, climate change and more. Those are all things that many people would change about the world but I want everyone to think bigger. Why are there so many problems in our world today? One word: human greed.

If I could change one thing about the world, I would eliminate human greed. Human greed is at the core of most of our world?s biggest problems. Greed is like a newborn seed that grows into a poisonous vine, eventually dominating the human soul like an infectious disease, spreading to every corner of society. Ultimately, blinding us from the truth.

We refused to see the repercussions of pollution. Our greed blinded us from this reality. Global warming exists because of our greed. We were greedy and wanted more goods so we built more factories. We saw coal as a cheap and effective energy source therefore our factories started using coal which creates pollution. Pollution in turn causes global warming. The same goes for war. Leaders of countries are greedy and want more for their countries, from that greed arises war. Instead of being greedy, we should all be more kind and caring towards others. Wait, but isn?t it human nature to be greedy? Yes. We are all greedy and that is something that might never be changed but the problem is that we all view being greedy as something normal and good when in fact, greed is anything but good.

At school, I suffered from loneliness. Before entering middle school, I had a few friends and generally speaking was happy but after entering middle school, I became an outcast in my grade. Nobody understood me and wanted to talk to me. Why? Because I wasn?t approachable. I barely socialized and talked to people. I knew that I wasn?t approachable but I didn?t know how to become more approachable. You could also say that I was greedy. I didn?t socialize because I wanted to focus on my academics more. In my pursuit of a higher grade, I lost all my friends and became miserable. In fact, I still struggle with socializing today but the only difference now is that I don?t suffer from loneliness anymore. I am also certain that many of us in the audience have felt lonely before. We all know how it feels to be alone. Loneliness is like a fireman taking out a fire, in this case the fire is what we love to do. My greed and desire for a higher grade took out my fire, replacing it with misery. Don?t let greed take out your fire.

Ladies and Gentlemen, this isn?t only a story about a lonely teenager. Greed is at the center of most of our world?s biggest problems like global warming, war. That is why I urge all of you today to rethink your perception of greed. Greed isn?t a good thing. You know what is? Being kind and caring about others. When you extend kindness, people tend to want to be in a relationship with you. Relationships are like your comfort food, when you feel sad they cheer you up. We all should love something other than ourselves. So, let us all build more relationships with others, lets make someone else?s day better instead of focusing on ourselves.
