Stop Valve-Its Function, Types, Installation and Features

Top Quality Stop Valves Manufactured By Maniks

What is Stop Valve?

A valve opened or closed at will (manually) for preventing or regulating flow (of a liquid in a pipe) is called as stop valve. Simply a stop valve is any sort of valve type that completely stops the flow of liquid flow through a pipe.

Stop valves is mainly used in plumbing or industrial applications to shut off the flow of (hot or cold) water to a plumbing fixture, such as an icemaker, toilet, faucet, dishwasher etc. Stop valves also allow performing routine maintenance like filter change and drain cleaning, and also to replace the entire design or appliance.

There are many types of stop valves, but two of the most widely used are gate valves and globe valves. Gate valves do not restrict flow when not in use, but they take longer time to move into position and are very much likely to leak. A globe valve will interrupt flow all the times, but will move into its position very quickly. Both of these valve styles are common in piping and refrigeration systems of all sizes and shapes.

Most of the time, a stop valve is necessary as a safety feature. These valves completely stop flow of any kind of liquid flowing through the system. As a result, these valves are typically used in important machinery or a human workstation. A stop valve may be operated manually or they may be incorporated into an automated system. Manually operated stop valves generally have a brightly-colored screw handle which is most common in many pipe systems.

Stop Valve Function and Types:

Maniks manufactures Stop valves (MSVA) in angle-way and straight-way types with a Standard neck (MSVA-S). The stop valves are manufactured to meet all the refrigeration and industrial application requirements of customers and are designed to give continuous flow characteristics which are easy to repair and dismantle the valve whenever necessary.

The stop valve is designed to provide perfect closing and ensure a high system pulsation and vibration, which may be present specifically in the discharge line of the system.

Stop Valve Features:

  • Applicable to HCFC, HFC, R717 (Ammonia) and R744 (CO2).
  • Can be used in petro-chemical applications and chemical.
  • Modular Concept :
  • Each type of valve is available with many different connection types and sizes.
  • Stop valves are Possible to convert into Standard neck stop valve (MSVA-S) and any other product in the MSVL family (regulating valve, check valve or strainer, stop check valve) just by replacing the complete top part of the valve.
  • Fast and easy valve repair service. It is easy to replace or repair the top part of the valve and no welding is needed.
  • Optional accessories :
  • Heavy duty industrial operation hand wheel for frequent operation.
  • Cap for infrequent operation.
  • Available in straight-way and angle-way versions with Standard neck
  • Each valve type is clearly marked with size, type and performance range.
  • The caps and valves are prepared for sealing, to prevent operation by an unauthorized person, using a seal wire.
  • Internal metal back seating :
  • DN 15?65 (?2 in.) Internal PTFE back-seating:
  • DN 80?150 (6 in.)
  • Can accept flow in both directions.
  • Housing and bonnet material is low temperature steel according to requirements of the Pressure Equipment Directive and other international classification authorities.
  • Equipped with stainless steel bolts. Max. working pressure :
  • 52 bar g (754 psi g)
  • Temperature range: ?60/+150C (?76/+302F)

Stop Valve Design:

Connections:

  • Butt-weld DIN (EN 10220)
  • Butt-weld ANSI (B 36.10 Schedule 80), DN 15?40 (?1 in.)
  • Butt-weld ANSI (B 36.10 Schedule 40)
  • DN 50?150 (2?6M)
  • Socket Weld (ANSI B 16.11), DN 15 ? DN 50 (?2 in.)
  • Outside pipe thread
  • G in. ? G 7?8 in. (ISO 228/1)
  • FPT Female Pipe Thread, NPT (ANSI/ASME B 1.20.1),

Housing:

  • Made of special, cold resistant steel.

Valve Cone:

  • The valve cone may be turned on the spindle. Thus there will be no friction in between the seat and the cone when the valve is in operation (closed and opened) and the special design will avoid the cone spin due to pulsation and vibration, when the valve is in open position. Teflon tightening ring is used which provides perfect sealing, with minimum closing force.

Spindle:

  • Made of polished stainless steel, ideal for leap seal sealing.

Packing gland:

  • The low temperature packing gland provides a perfect tightness in the range: ?60/+150C (?76/+302F). The packing glands are embedded with a scraper ring that is used to prevent penetration of dirt and ice into the packing gland.

Stop Valve Installation:

It is recommended that stop valves should be installed in the direction of flow of liquid indicated by the arrow on the valve body. These valves can be installed in the reverse direction but this may slightly reduce the Kv-value (Cv-value). The Maniks stop valve is manufactured to provide high internal pressure. However, the piping system typically should be designed reduce the risk of hydraulic pressure caused by thermal expansion and to avoid liquid traps.

For further information refer to installation instructions for MSVA.

Stop Valve Technical Specifications:

  • Refrigerants: Applicable to HFC, R717 (Ammonia), HCFC, and R744 (CO2). For further queries please see installation instruction for MSVA.
  • Temperature range: 60/+150C (?76/+302F).
  • Max. Working pressure 52 bar g (754 psi g).
