The best horses in Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

There are so many different horses to choose from in Legend of Zelda, including many special horses available in the game or from amiibo, and various wild horses. It?s hard to choose which one to use.

If you google for the fastest horse, the results come back as ?Royal Stallion?, which couldn?t be further from the truth, considering it?s the second slowest horse in this list after the giant horse. Also surprisingly, you can get a wild horse which is better than the special horses. Some would say Epona from the Link amiibo is the best horse, but that?s not true either.

So let?s settle the debate once and for all, and list the best horses we can find in the game!

I didn?t cover all the creatures you can mount in the game such as Lord of the Mountain, Stalhorse, Bears, Stags etc. They are cool to mount, but you can?t register them at a stable, so not very useful.

Special horses

These special horses have fixed stats. Two of these are available via in-game quests.

Giant horse

?It?s so big?, as the NPC in the Mounted Archery Camp would say. It?s the biggest horse in the game. It has the strength of 5, the speed of 2 and no stamina. Unlike other horses, once it gets to speed, it doesn?t slow down and can be faster than 3-star speed horses who need to slow down.

You can find this horse in the Taobab Grassland in the Lake Tower Region. To begin the quest, speak to Straia at the Mounted Archery Camp. You don?t need to start the quest first to catch it though. Check out this guide for full details on how to get it.

The biggest disappointment with this horse is that you cannot change the saddle or bridle. Which is a bummer since you lose the ability to summon it anywhere as you can?t put the Ancient Saddle on it.

I named mine Dragmire, because it resembles Ganondorf?s horse.

Royal horse

The Royal horse looks stunning. It?s supposed to be descendant of the horse used by Princess Zelda. You also get the Royal Horse Gear after finishing the quest, which looks perfect on the horse. With 4 stars for strength, 3 stars for speed and 5 stars for stamina, it?s a good all-rounded horse. Not the best one regarding stats though, but close.

To start the quest, speak to Toffa at Outskirt Stable. Check out this guide for full details on how to get it. Mine was wondering around a tree near the horse statue, away from the other horses in the grassland.

I named it Storm because that was the name of Zelda?s horse in Variant Comics.

Epona

Epona is Link?s iconic horse from previous games. It has 4 stars in each stat. You can get it if you have the Smash Bros. Series Link Amiibo. I don?t have it, so no Epona for me 🙁

You cannot give it a different name, nor can you change the bridle or saddle. Honestly, horses are pretty useless if you can?t put the ancient gear on them since they aren?t near when you actually need them.

Link?s horse

This horse is special because it?s the one used in the game trailers and during several of the memories. It?s also the default horse that appears if you don?t have a horse when fighting Ganon. It has a strength of 4, speed of 3 and stamina of 3.

You can find this horse in the Taobab Grassland and Upland Lindor. Check this reddit post for more details on this horse.

I named mine Epona, because it?s poor man?s Epona 🙁

Even better wild horses

The best horses can be found in Ridgeland Tower region, in the grassland just above Maag No?rah Shrine, near Serenne Stable. When you go to the grassland, find the horses with the color you like, mount them and take them to the Serenne Stable to check their stats and register. You can save and load again to get different colored horses if you didn?t like the previous ones. Just make sure not to get the ones with spots because they have shitty stats. It will take some tries to get the stats you want, but the stable is nearby, so it?s not a big deal. Check out this video which describes how to catch them in detail.

The fastest Horse

With 5 stars for speed, the fastest horse in the game can be found with a strength of 2, speed of 5 and stamina of 3. Not very impressive in strength and stamina level. However, strength just represents the health and not the actual attack power. So keep it away from enemies and you?ll be fine.

This horse feels so fast that you?ll only know it as soon as you ride it. The stamina stats don?t really matter much. You can increase stamina temporarily by feeding it Endura Carrots if you really need. In addition, if you have the expansion pass, you get the Ancient Briddle which adds extra 2 spurs to the stamina.

I found a blue one and named it Caspian, because the sea is blue and Caspian is the name of a Sea 😉

The all-rounded horse

This one by far is my favorite horse. It?s not too slow and has good overall stats, even better than Epona. It has a strength of 4, speed of 4 and stamina of 5, as far as I know, the best stats in the game.

Mine has a dusky brown color and looks beautiful. I named it Arion, after the divine horse in Greek mythology.

Wrapping up

I hope this article satisfied all your horsey needs. By the way, if you want to rename a special horse such as the Royal horse and the Giant horse, you can release them and find them again in the wild. They will respawn. To release a horse, you need to fill up your slots by catching 5 horses. Leave a comment if you find something wrong or just want to add something, and have a great day!
