Unable to gather your party but still ready to adventure? You can play Dungeons & Dragons solo or with one friend (a duet) to satisfy that urge to roll your d20s. If you aren?t sure where to start, we at Dungeon Masters Guild have some recommendations for you!
Solo Dungeons & Dragons combines our favorite roleplaying game with a pick-your-path style of adventuring.
DMsGuild community creator 5e Solo Gamebooks is all about creating compelling solo adventures and has an offering of ongoing series and one-shots that are 2?4 hours of fun each. Find all their adventures here.
There are even FREE or ?Pay What You Want? solo adventures available on Dungeon Masters Guild.
To Hell & Back Again by Kienna Shaw and Donathin Frye is the perfect adventure for new players and veterans looking to experience Dungeons & Dragons in a new way! It?s written as a solo adventure, where choices have gigantic consequences, but it also provides balanced rules to play with a group or a Dungeon Master as well! This 80 page adventure is a heart-pounding origins story that can stand alone or fit perfectly as a prequel to D&D?s Descent Into Avernus.
Another free (and ENnie-nominated) option is The Executioner?s Daughter by Ashley Warren. Soldra is a beautiful, ancient city, flanked by sea and mountain and lit by the sun as if blessed by the gods themselves. But its beauty comes with a price. After a tumultuous history fighting dragons that attacked and looted the city, the superstitious citizens of Soldra make an annual offering to appease the dragon god, Bahamut. This year?s sacrificial ceremony does not go as planned. What will transpire on Garra?s Peak?
Duet Dungeons & Dragons are adventures balanced for one Dungeon Master and one player. Oftentimes, these adventures lean on puzzles, roleplaying, and other elements of play, but they include battle as well!
Beth Ball and Jonathan Ball are a couple who write D&D Duet adventures together, including an ongoing campaign that starts with First Blush, a FREE or Pay What You Want PDF. This inaugural adventure of theirs is ideal for new players and/or Dungeon Masters. Written for first-level characters, it encourages collaborative storytelling and introduces D&D skills via low-stakes social and combat encounters before ramping up the challenge.
Also check out The Blood Hunter, a duet adventure built entirely around Matthew Mercer?s Blood Hunter class, infused with a Witcher vibe, and supplemented with musical scores via Spotify links. It?s all about immersion, atmosphere, and fun.
Sidekicks are another way to enjoy Dungeons & Dragons with a group as small as one DM and one player. Introduced in Dungeons & Dragons? Essentials Kit, sidekicks adventure alongside your player, can be controlled by them easily at the DM?s discretion, and can level up as well. DMsGuild community creators have run with this concept and crafted sidekicks for every setting and every flavor of play.
Enjoy sidekicks in Eberron.
