I mean, do rogues even need a profession?
Updated: 2019?05?25
I?ve been playing WoW since Vanilla, but I?ve always been broke as a joke.
I can never afford the cool expensive mounts. I just recently bought the Traveler?s Tundra Mammoth and that?s been out for like 8 years.
I want to fix that, so I?ve been doing some research.
The first thing I thought was:
?profession, literally a word about having a job.?
Your profession in WoW, sometimes referred to as tradeskills, is like your character?s job, so that?s the best place to start when it comes to making money, right?
Next step will obviously be how to be good at your job. We?ll get to that later.
I was wondering, between all of my characters, what?s the best profession for each one?
Pretty much any class can take on any profession, and it actually doesn?t matter which class has which profession if all I?m doing is trying to make money.
After all, I could just farm mats on one character, and send to another (not entirely true, and we?ll get to that below).
At one point in time, I think it was Cataclysm IIRC, mining gave you extra stamina and skinning gave you extra crit or agility or something. That is no longer the case, and so it no longer matters.
That said, my list goes more with lore/RP, or practicality for using it on that character, than anything else.
My Class Menagerie
Here?s what I put together for my account. This doesn?t have to be what you do, and it?s not even really a recommendation of any sort.
The reason why I?m doing these is because they make the most sense to me.
It even creates more work for me. Some of these I don?t have leveled to max. I don?t think I even have a shaman character.
You may want to choose different ones, from below (see: Other Classes), if you already have max level characters.
- Druid ? Alchemy + Herbalism (Tauren)
- Hunter ? Engineering + Mining
- Monk ? Inscription + Herbalism
- Rogue ? Jewel Crafting + Mining (Goblin)
- Shaman ? Leather Working + Skinning
- Warlock ? Enchanting + Tailoring
- Warrior ? Blacksmithing + Mining
Here?s a breakdown of why, for each:
Druid ? Alchemy + Herbalism
My main has been a Tauren druid for WoD and Legion, and I always liked alchemy (in and outside of WoW), so this was just sort of obvious for me, personally.
I raid most on my druid and alchemy works great for that.
Plus, herbalism is faster on Tauren and druids can stay in travel form when picking flowers.
Hunter ? Engineering + Mining
This is actually further separated from lore/RP for me than usual.
Normally, I would have a hunter be exactly that ? so skinning and leather working.
But, I decided to go engineering because of the scopes and other ranged weapon augments that engineers can craft.
Also, not 100% on this, and I?ll double check before I make my Classic WoW Professions guide, but I think engineers could make hunter ammo, too.
Mining goes with engineering for obvious reasons.
Monk ? Inscription + Herbalism
For lore/RP reasons, monks IRL through history have been writers of texts, especially before the printing press was invented.
Herbalism goes with inscription for obvious reasons.
Rogue ? Jewel Crafting + Mining
For lore/RP reasons, rogues can be thieves, and thieves would steal jewels, right?
Mining goes with jewel crafting for obvious reasons.
For race, you should go with Goblin?hands down. ~~Goblins earn 1 million gold discount on mounts such as the Mighty Caravan Brutosaur, with the racial trait ?Best Deals Anywhere?. Rogues have an advantage to earning gold through pickpocketing and a 5,0000g quest every week. This makes a Goblin Rogue an easy way to make gold fast to buy your Brutosaur?or any other mount.
UPDATE: Hanneke Van de Langenberg pointed out:
just a update As of beta build build 26812 (June 12th, 2018), Mighty Caravan Brutosauris no longer affected by rep discounts (or by being a goblin). Players will ALWAYS have to pay 5 million gold to obtain Mighty Caravan Brutosaur.
Goblins should still get discounts on many other mounts.
Shaman ? Leather Working + Skinning
I gave leather working to shaman because them and hunters are the only classes that wear leather and mail, and I already had decided hunters get engineering as priority.
Skinning goes with leather working for obvious reasons.
Warlock ? Enchanting + Tailoring
This is sort of outdated, but not incorrect thinking, from when I was playing Vanilla WoW and other early expansions, and probably applies much less now than it did before.
It will be double checked and researched before I write my Classic WoW Professions guide.
Enchanting is a fairly expensive tradeskill to have because you don?t sell any of your greens, blues, etc. You disenchant (DE) them. Because of this, you miss out on a lot of early gold.
This is mostly still true today.
Warlocks get a ?free? first mount, and back before mounts were account-wide, it was worth while to save up as much gold as possible for your mount.
It sucked not having a mount because you couldn?t afford it.
Since warlocks and paladins get free mounts, I figured they were good classes to have a trade skill that might cost you more to level than others.
I double it up with tailoring for two reasons:
- I don?t need a gathering trade for tailoring because cloth is a mob drop.
- I can DE the green, blue, etc, crafted gear from tailoring, which will help my enchanting skill.
Warrior ? Blacksmithing + Mining
At this point it was between paladin and warrior, and the only reason I went with warrior was because my original main from vanilla is warrior and I felt like I wanted to level him up some more soon.
I haven?t really played him much since TBC came out.
My paladin is almost max level and was my main from TBC all the way through to Cataclysm, but I don?t really play him much anymore. I may make him a farming character (mentioned later in this guide).
I pretty much don?t play death knights and I frequently forget they even exist.
Mining goes with blacksmithing for obvious reasons.
Other Classes (and their best professions according to me)
- Death Knight ? Blacksmithing + Mining
- Demon Hunter ? Who + Cares
- Mage ? Enchanting + Tailoring
- Paladin ? Jewel Crafting + Mining
- Priest ? Inscription + Herbalism
Death Knight ? Blacksmithing + Mining
Honestly, only because DK?s wear plate armor and blacksmithing makes it. Not real creative here.
Mining goes with blacksmithing for obvious reasons.
Demon Hunter ? Who + Cares
Who cares?
Honestly, they?ve got enough going for them right now. I don?t even want to talk about DH?s.
Mage ? Enchanting + Tailoring
It just seems to fit lore/RP that a mage would enchant things, and tailoring goes with it well as stated in the warlock section of this guide.
Paladin ? Jewel Crafting + Mining
I chose this because I play Horde and when TBC came out, Horde finally got to play paladins as the blood elf race.
That same expansion was when jewel crafting was introduced.
In my head, because of that, they just go together.
Mining goes with jewel crafting for obvious reasons.
Priest ? Inscription + Herbalism
Similar to monks, in IRL history I feel like priests did some writing or copying of religious texts before the printing press, so it just makes sense to me to be inscribers (is that the right word?).
Herbalism goes with inscription for obvious reasons.
Is it worth it having one character dedicated to farming mining and herbalism at the same time?
In Legion, Blood of Sargeras is bind-on-pickup (BOP) and comes from mostly gathering, so it?s important to spread my gathering professions out rather than on one or two characters.
But, if I have an extra character that?s not doing anything and I need extra herbs or mining, I may set up a character just to farm both.
All characters can farm cloth?which class is best for that? Probably one that can AOE farm humanoids.
Couple that with a character that can fly around and farm mining and herb and we?ve got a pretty solid farming character.
I?m on the fence about doing this between paladin or death knight, because I want a character who can farm humanoids best, so AOE ability + survivability. I need to do some testing and figure that out.
I?ve done some research on this subject and I found a wide range of responses from people on both Reddit and the WoW forums, so I figured the best thing to do is test this myself.
Spoiler alert: I?ll probably just stick with paladin on this because I already have a high level one and don?t have a high level DK (I think mine is like level 85 or something).
We didn?t even talk about first aid, cooking, fishing, or archaeology.
Learn how to make real money (not gold!) playing World of Warcraft:
Hi, I?m Garrett Mickley.
I spent years balancing a day job with night school and finding time to play World of Warcraft in between?and still get some sleep! I really just wanted to play WoW all day.
I spent those years learning marketing while working for million dollar companies, and I applied everything I learned at my marketing day jobs to my hobby of playing WoW.
Now, I make thousands of dollars a year just from a few videos I made years ago of me playing World of Warcraft.
