She feels uncomfortable with the racist attitudes of her friends towards their maids. She could share maids? hard life, because she is also discriminated against because of her gender. At that time, Skeeter didn?t do anything for the housekeepers.

Skeeter was shocked when Hilly sends a letter to the home sanitation initiative to install separate bathrooms for the help.

The book is published anonymously, and it gained a huge success.
