If you?re a complete beginner to hydroponics, the sophistication of this system makes its setup and maintenance less simple than the previous systems. But more on that later.

Here?s how it works:

Your plants are sitting in a pot, supported by an inert medium like rockwool or pebbles.

Nutrient-rich water gets pumped from the nutrient reservoir to the top of your growing medium.

Then slowly the nutrient-rich water drips from a network of pipes/tubes and emitters to the roots of your plants

A drip irrigation system is a continues flow system, which means it?s easier to get your plants growing FAST.

But if you?re a beginner, you really need to understand the things that can go wrong in a system like this?and prepare carefully.

For starters, if you?re into DIY, setting up a drip irrigation system takes more time and care to setup than the previous systems (Ebb and Flow or DWC system).

Then there?s the danger of emitters clogging up and potentially ruining your grow?if you don?t keep your water and/or emitters free of nutrient build-up.

You also need to find the perfect balance on how much you expose the roots of your plants to the drip/flow. Dripping too much can easily lead to root rot or fungus?while too little can result in stunted growth.

Lastly, if your power goes off for whatever reason and your pump stops dripping, you basically have only a few hours to notice or else?you?re screwed.

How to Setup A Drip Hydroponic System

  • As already mentioned, the drip system is very flexible. It can scale well according to the size and complexity of a growing operation. For a basic drip system, you will need the following essential items:
  • Drip Emitters: Depending on the number of plants you plan to grow, you will have to buy an emitter for each plant. They are readily available at garden centers and hydroponic suppliers.
  • Thin Tubing: spaghetti tubing is readily available in the market and is perfect for a drip emitter.
  • PVC Tubing: These will be the main lines that carry the water and nutrients from the reservoir pump to the emitters. Depending on the size and complexity of your setup, the length and number of tubes required will vary. For smaller home-based setups, two-inch tubes are enough.
  • Water Pump: a regular submersible pump is more than adequate for the task. Capacities of between 120?300 gallons per minute should suffice for smaller setups.
  • A Tray: In smaller recirculating setups, you can get best results by having all the pots drain into a common tray. This is a simpler option than having separate run-off tubes from each pot to the reservoir.
  • A Large Bucket/Bin: This will act as the reservoir. Choose between 10?20 gallon volume depending on the size of your setup.
  • Small pots for your plant
  • A Garden timer for the pump
  • Aquarium grade silicone sealant
  • A Hydroponic growing medium like coco coir
  • A power drill, and hacksaw or PVC cutter to cut the pip

Hydroponic ebb and flow trays uses pumps and a large water reservoir to periodically flood the plant roots with nutrients and water. An easy method is using a large plastic tote to contain the nutrient solution with the plants sitting in a deep tray on top of the lid. The nutrient solution is pumped into the tray from the reservoir below, and then is allowed to drain back into the reservoir.
